Trail running listening to Dean Karnazes’ latest book “A Runner’s High” easily led to listening to all of his books and other ultra marathon runners’ books. Early on directing PR for “A Runner’s High,” Dean casually said on the phone, “the best trails are the ones in your own backyard.” East Bay trails have been a bit of a sanctuary over the past 20 months; often running 8 miles without seeing another runner, though seeing lots of wildlife. The perfect start to the day😀. Happy to have the ✨Marin Headlands✨ also as my backyard. The most precious: my beautiful ❤️wife, ❤️kids, and ❤️brother at the finish line for my first Spartan race. Feelin’ 45 years young today (and everyday!!).

Big craft beer news for the East Bay!!!

@fieldworkbrewingco announced today plans to open its largest open-air beer garden and indoor taproom to date in downtown San Leandro in spring 2022. Adding an eighth location to its Northern California footprint, Fieldwork Brewing reimagines a former 1960s Firestone Auto Service Center into a 7,800 square feet East Bay craft beer destination at 1495 East 14th Street in San Leandro. Exposed steel framing and three large roll-up garage doors with 1,400 square feet of open ceiling define the outdoor beer garden totaling 4,780 square feet (265-person capacity). An adjacent indoor space (3,020 square feet) featuring 285 square feet of windows joins the 65-person capacity taproom.

At East 14th Street and Juana Street, Fieldwork Brewing’s San Leandro beer garden features a 75-year-old olive tree as its centerpiece. An abundance of comfortable seating options includes lounge areas with designated fire pits, loveseats with coffee tables, picnic table seating, bench seats encircling planters, and a standing bar room area. Ample beer garden bicycle parking is available, as well as a dedicated kids’ area.

The indoor taproom has 32 tap handles with wrap-around bar seating and picnic table seating areas. Fieldwork’s Neapolitan-inspired pizza menu developed by Chef Jeffrey Amber (Culinary Director, Fieldwork Brewing Company) utilizes organic flour from Central Milling (Logan, Utah) and fresh whole peeled organic tomatoes sourced from Rob DiNapoli (Los Gatos, Calif.). Spring vegetables and artisanal meats will shape the opening menu with 10 different pizza styles. Starters include many health-conscious options, and a children’s menu will be available.

Born in Mexico City and raised in Los Angeles and Napa by a single mother, Chef Garcia rose to acclaim on an untraditional path to becoming one of San Francisco’s rising star chefs. With no formal training, Chef Garcia entered the restaurant industry at age 16 and has risen the ranks on his pursuit of culinary distinction. He first moonlighted as a dishwasher at a Yountville hotel restaurant during his high school years. While raising two sons who were both born before Garcia turned 20, he remained steadfast in his determination to reach his greatest dreams.

Over two decades, Garcia cooked and staged at Hurley’s (Napa), Angèle (Napa), Calistoga Ranch, and Michael Minna (SF) before landing a cooking position at Cyrus (Healdsburg), then The French Laundry. Today, Chef Garcia designs an elegant tasting menu at one of the city’s foremost downtown restaurants.

One of the great honors I've had in 2021 is the opportunity to direct PR for @ultramarathon ! When I take on a new client, I always try to get at least one crown jewel of the campaign, a big national hit that really takes the project home! For Dean Karnazes' latest book "A Runner's High," I was able to secure a placement with WIRED magazine, which is now live on YouTube!

As a runner myself, I've never had an experience where I finish listening to a really inspiring book while jogging and being able to call the author and personally thank them. Working with Dean changed that. I'm very grateful for that!
