Joyride's latest locales open following the success of their pizzerias at 411 Valencia Street in the Mission District and 730 Howard Street in Yerba Buena Gardens. Not only are the brick-and-mortars catching the attention of pizza lovers, their crave-worthy Instagram reels are gaining millions of views!

Fieldwork Brewing has officially opened its largest open-air beer garden and indoor taproom in downtown San Leandro. Now operating eight locations throughout Northern California, Fieldwork Brewing's newest locale reimagines a former 1960s Firestone Auto Service Center into a 7,800 square feet East Bay craft beer destination at 100 West Juana Avenue in San Leandro (three short walkable blocks from San Leandro BART station). Exposed steel framing and three large roll-up garage doors with 1,400 square feet of open ceiling define the outdoor beer garden totaling 4,780 square feet (265-person capacity). An adjacent indoor space (3,020 square feet) featuring 285 square feet of windows joins the 65-person capacity taproom.

Fieldwork Brewing's San Leandro beer garden features a 75-year-old olive tree as its centerpiece. An abundance of comfortable seating options includes lounge areas with designated fire pits, loveseats with coffee tables, picnic table seating, bench seats encircling planters, and a standing bar room area. Ample beer garden bicycle parking is available, as well as a dedicated kids' area.

Through more than 80 seasonally inspired recipes, Tanya Holland’s “California Soul” showcases modern soul food from the acclaimed chef of Brown Sugar Kitchen and host of Tanya’s Kitchen Table. Tanya’s inventive cuisine—rooted in a Black Southern cultural repertoire with a twenty-first-century sensibility using local, sustainable, chef-driven, seasonal ingredients—is showcased in recipes for every season, such as Collard Green Tabbouleh, Zucchini–Scallion Waffles with Toasted Pecan Romesco, Grilled Shrimp and Corn with Avocado White BBQ Sauce, Fried Chicken Paillards with Arugula and Pea Shoots Salad, Rhubarb Upside-Down Cake, and Honey Lavender Chess Pie.

The recipes—influenced by the historical migration of African American families, including Tanya’s own—reveal the key ingredients, techniques, and traditions that African Americans brought with them as they left the South for California, creating a beloved version of soul food. Beyond recipes, Tanya spotlights fifteen contemporary Black Californian foodmakers—farmers, coffee roasters, and other talented artisans—whose work help defines California soul food, with stunning portraiture and stories. Filtered through the rich history of African American migration that brought her own family from the Deep South to the West Coast, Tanya’s recipes are as comforting and delicious as they are steeped in history.

GRAMMY® Award-winning pianist/composer Arturo O'Farrill (@pianitis ) and nonprofit the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) along with presenting partner @littleislandnyc host the North American premiere of the acclaimed “The Cuban Khaleeji Project” from Friday, August 19 – Sunday, August 21, 2022 at “The Amph” at Little Island at Pier 55 in Hudson River Park. The “Cuban Khaleeji Project” was originally commissioned and presented by NYU-Abu Dhabi Arts Center (2019) and its stateside premiere will be hosted at NYC’s new public park: Little Island.

“The Cuban Khaleeji Project” is a rare experience for New Yorkers to witness the intersections of Afro Cuban jazz and the music of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). O’Farrill leads listeners on an exploration of the Arab, Moorish, and North African roots of Afro Latin and Afro Cuban music and the seafaring music of the Arabian Gulf.

“The Cuban Khaleeji Project” is inspired by the work of author Ned Sublette, who traces the connection between Arabic and Afro Cuban music as it travels via the Strait of Gibraltar and Andalucia, Spain. For “The Cuban Khaleeji Project,” the 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and invited special guests Ghazi Al-Mulaifi & Boom.Diwan, Ali Obaid, Yazz Ahmed, and Malika Zarra will recreate the usage of microtonal variations and improvisation in Middle Eastern song and similar practices in the blues and Afro folkloric chants, while exploring the relationship of khaleeji and Cuban music.

A stellar one-day music festival debuts in my hometown of Minneapolis this weekend!! Always love publicizing concerts and events in the Twin Cities!

Chef Presents and Earthdance Global present an unprecedented U.S. global music event @wordsoundpowerfestival to Celebrate Soundsystem Culture with an epic block party in Northeast Minneapolis at 56 Brewing (3055 NE Columbia Avenue) on Saturday, August 13, 2022. Akin to Jamaican soundsystem events of the 1950s, Word.Sound.Power unites the Minneapolis community with a one-day urban festival for essential cultural healing. Five separate soundsystems will fill the streets with an array of Jamaica's biggest stars sharing the stage with premier U.S. hip-hop artists and DJs from noon to 10pm.

Word.Sound.Power presents a collective of international artists spanning generations, genres, and geographical borders. Seminal headlining artists include Black Uhuru vocalist Mykal Rose, master turntablist Cut Chemist, Jurassic 5 emcee Chali 2Na, dancehall sensation Turbulence, reggae legend Johnny Osbourne, jungle pioneer DJ Soul Slinger and innovators such as Up Bustle & Out and Kush Arora, plus local Minneapolis mainstays Prince Jabba and Truth Maze, among many others. Dub originator and King Tubby protégé, The Scientist, will perform live and serve as the acting sound engineer for Word.Sound.Power.

Peregrine falcons nesting on high-rise ledges, cougars prowling in yards, and seals lolling on urban beaches: these are now familiar sights to city-dwellers, and to those who follow them on social media. But, as environmental studies professor Peter S. Alagona shows in his new book THE ACCIDENTAL ECOSYSTEM: People and Wildlife in American Cities (UC Press; April 2022), this relatively new phenomenon of thriving animal life in urban areas is more than an eye-catching curiosity or an example of society encroaching on nature. Instead, it's a whole new ecosystem, one that shows how animals and humans can live together peacefully, how species can adapt in extremely short time periods, and how we can start to right the ecological sins committed when urban sprawl first began.

THE ACCIDENTAL ECOSYSTEM explores the natural history of cities and chronicles how our relationship with wildlife, which has typically been defined by habitat destruction and "pest control," needs to be redefined. It's gradually become apparent that cities can be more hospitable to some wildlife than more "natural" areas, a paradigm-shifting fact for our rapidly urbanizing planet. New York City, for example, which was once far richer in wildlife than celebrated national parks like Yellowstone, is once again becoming a hot spot of biological diversity. Coyotes, which have been slaughtered by the millions yet continue to thrive, are better suited for suburban living than on ranches and farms, and robins can build their nests -- marvels of engineering -- using discarded gum wrappers and other bits of litter.
